For days I have thought about trying the felt/tissue paper technique that Jen used (Bayou Quilts: "Immature Dragon Frolics in the Sea" JQC2006).
So, last night I decided to experiment, I fused crumbled tissue paper to timtex and backed it with felt. I drew an eye, used colored pencils and started sketching with the sewing machine. All the treadplay was done from the top of piece except for the stitches in the white of the eye and the raw edge finish. The piece is 6" x 4 ". I had so much fun and am very pleased with the results. I was really surprised with the durablity of the wunderunder/tissue paper combination. I somehow thought that it would be fragile. The felt on the back helped to give just the right amount of fullness. Note to self: Make more time for play!

Wow. That is really neat!! I am not sure I understand, tho, when you say you used crumbled tissue paper. Any way you can do this again, step-by-step and take pictures??
teri
huh? yeah(sp)...that would be crumpled.
That is so cool! Good job!
So the crumpled tissue is behind white felt so that the color shows through? Threadwork on top and backed with Timtex for stabilizer? Have I got it right?
Great results! Jen
Tissue paper is on the top, timtex middle, (purple)felt on back. It's really simple. I want to do another and I'll document step-by-steps pictures.
Kim this is a great - I would love to see a step by step too
Wow...this was a real 'eye opener' when opening your page. It's wonderful and, like the others, I also would love to see a step by step. I've heard of the tissue paper thing but not seen it done.
I guess we can say the eyes have it :) interesting and pretty cool.
May I just say how fabulous that eye is .. you have done such a wonderful job... will have to stay tuned.
